Propellants

i 3 Propellants

Propellants

Propellants are the gases, other than air, which are used in aerosols to propel the contents from the container.

Butane (E943a) and Iso-butane (E943b)

Butane (E943a) and Iso-butane (E943b) are colourless, odourless flammable gases derived from natural gas, stored and shipped as liquids, and used as propellant gases for vegetable oil pan sprays and water-based emulsion sprays. They are permitted at quantum satis in the EU only for vegetable oil sprays and water-emulsion sprays .

Propane (E944)

Propane (E944) is a colourless and odourless component of natural gas, stored and shipped as liquid used as propellant gas for vegetable oil spray and water based emulsion sprays at quantum satis

Nitrous oxide (E942)

Nitrous oxide (E942) is most commonly obtained by the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate and is used in dairy products to both provide foaming and to extend shelf-life. Nitrous oxide is permitted as a packaging gas but is mostly used in foamed dairy products such as ready to serve whipped cream where it also provides inhibition of oxidative rancidity. It is permitted in the EU quantum satis.
