In October 2025, food additive regulations saw significant updates in the EU, including revised rules for sorbic acid, potassium sorbate, and quillaia extract. You can find out more about these additives on our website.
Preservatives
Sorbic acid and potassium sorbate: The EU amended rules and now allow these to be used in non-heat-treated plant-based mousses up to 500mg/kg.
Quillaia extract: Updates were issued to the use requirements and specifications for quillaia extract (E999) which is now approved for use in food supplements (both solid and liquid), except for those intended for infants and young children.
Foods for particular Nutritional Uses
EU regulations for foods for particular nutritional uses (previously called PARNUTs) were updated through Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/2058, which replaces outdated references with the current legal framework under Regulation (EU) No 609/2013 and amends rules for food additives in Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. This 2025 legislation addresses products for infants and young children, foods for special medical purposes, and total diet replacements for weight control, simplifying rules and harmonizing them with current law. The legislation updates the lists of permitted food additives, for example by amending Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 to reflect the new structure and to delete obsolete references.
